Learn more about our tool and the Royal Thai General System of Transcription
Our ThaiScript Romanizer is a free online tool designed to help users convert Thai script to Roman letters using the Royal Thai General System of Transcription (RTGS). This system is the official standard for transliterating Thai script into the Latin alphabet, as established by the Royal Institute of Thailand.
The RTGS was developed to provide a standardized method for transliterating Thai script into the Latin alphabet. It is commonly used in government documents, road signs, and international communications. While the system does not represent tones in its basic form, our tool offers an enhanced version that shows tone marks as diacritical accents for better pronunciation guidance.
Our tool analyzes Thai text by breaking it down into syllables and applying the appropriate RTGS rules for each character. It correctly handles consonants, vowels, tone marks, and special characters. The enhanced tone mark feature applies Unicode combining characters to vowels to indicate the proper tone pronunciation.
The Thai script was created in 1283 by King Ramkhamhaeng the Great. It is an abugida, where each consonant has an inherent vowel sound. Romanization systems were developed over time to make the language more accessible to foreigners. The RTGS was established by the Royal Institute of Thailand in 1939 and has become the standard for official and academic use.
