The Royal Thai General System of Transcription (RTGS) is the official system for romanizing Thai script, published by the Royal Institute of Thailand. It provides a standardized way to represent Thai characters using the Latin alphabet.
Romanization helps people who are not familiar with the Thai script to read and pronounce Thai words. It is commonly used in textbooks, dictionaries, and on road signs in Thailand. Our tool also offers an enhanced version with tone marks for better pronunciation guidance.
This tool uses the RTGS and aims for high accuracy. However, due to the complexities of the Thai language, some nuances may not be perfectly captured. It is intended as a helpful guide, not a definitive translation. Our improved word segmentation using the Wordcut library helps with more accurate conversions.
Our enhanced version shows tone marks as diacritical accents:
- Mid tone: No mark (a)
- Low tone: Grave accent (à)
- Falling tone: Circumflex (â)
- High tone: Acute accent (á)
- Rising tone: Caron/háček (ǎ)

Our tool uses the Wordcut library, which is specifically designed for Thai word segmentation. This helps us properly separate compound words like ทำงาน (tham ngaan - "work") rather than incorrectly romanizing it as "thamngaan".
